Men's Soccer Tops TCNJ 3-1

Ewing, NJ (10/25/03) --- The College of New Jersey men's soccer team hosted the No. 8 ranked Red Hawks of Montclair State University toay in the Lions' regular-season home finale.

After playing the first half to a scoreless tie, the Red Hawks would emerge the 3-1 victor. Ranked No. 8 in Division III, MSU improves to 14-1-3 overall and 5-0-3 in the conference and is riding a 13-game unbeaten streak, while the Lions drop to 4-11-2 and 2-4-2 in the NJAC.

MSU sophomore SEAN HORAN (Tinton Falls, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) scored twice in the outing and provided the game-winner to lift his team to an important NJAC win. The two teams played to a scoreless first half before the Red Hawks got on the scoreboard first. Freshman defender KEVIN BURKHARDT (Clifton, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) broke thescorless tie with his fourth goal of the season at the 54:00 minute mark of a misplayed ball by the Lions' defense. The Lions tied the action at 58:36 when sophomore Matt Connor (Wayne, NJ/DePaul Catholic) converted the feed from the top right side of the box junior defender Brett Hockenjos (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) to knot the score at 1-1.

MSU's Horan broke tie at 72:31 on a pass from senior RYAN GUTERL (Lyndhurst, NJ/Lyndhurst) and gave his team a 2-1 lead that would hold up. He added the final goal of the game with 15 seconds left to play on a chip shot from the 50-yard line that bounced over the head of TCNJ's goalie for a goal. He now has eight goals on the year and a team-high 23 points with four game-winners. Montclair sophomore goalie EDGARD DINTEN (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) finished with four saves as TCNJ's Shawn Mecchi (Pittsgrove, NJ/Arthur P. Schalick) allowed the first goal of the game and played 54:00 minutes with no saves in the outing. Junior Rich Adams (Neptune, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) replaced Mecchi and took the loss after allowing both goals with three saves.
