Red Hawks Split with CUNY Foes

New York, NY (10/25/03) – The Montclair State volleyball team defeated host Hunter College, 3-1, on Saturday, Oct. 25, to snap a three-match winless streak. Montclair also faced Baruch College that day at the Hunter SportsPlex, coming up on the short end of a 3-1 score to complete the tri-match. MSU is now 8-26 overall, and remains 2-5 in NJAC competition.

Montclair defeated Hunter by 30-22, 33-31 and 30-28 scores. The host Hawks won the fourth game by a 30-22 count. Senior hitter CARMEN ALVARADO (Newark, NJ/Barringer) paced the Red Hawks offensively with 24 kills while adding seven digs and a solo block. Junior setter JENNIFER OLAN (Jersey City, NJ/Academic) finished with 55 assists and five digs for Montclair, while freshman hitter ASIA LIVINGSTON (Paterson, NJ/Passaic County Tech) contributed 18 kills and six digs and sophomore hitter BROOKSHIELD LAURENT (East Orange, NJ/Marylawn) had 12 kills.

The Red Hawks fell to Baruch by 30-25, 30-22 and 32-30 scores. Alvarado led MSU with nine kills and had three digs, while Olan registered 22 assists, five digs and one kill. Livingston collected seven kills, four digs, and four service aces, while junior defender Joanna Cortez (Paterson, NJ/East Side) notched 17 digs on the day, with eight against Baruch.

MSU finishes up the 2003 regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at 7:00 p.m. when it hosts Rutgers-Camden in a conference match at Panzer Gymnasium.
