Red Hawks Sweep Camden, Earn NJAC Tournament Berth

Upper Montclair, NJ (10/28/03) – The Montclair State University volleyball team closed out its 2003 regular season with a 3-0 sweep of Rutgers-Camden tonight in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match at Panzer Gymnasium.

The host Red Hawks won by game scores of 30-19, 30-14 and 30-25. The victory also clinched the sixth and final NJAC playoff berth for MSU, which improved to 9-26 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
Senior Joy Silver (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson) had eight kills for the visiting Scarlet Raptors, who fell to 3-17 on the year and 0-8 in the league.

Senior hitter CARMEN ALVARADO (Newark, NJ/Barringer) paced Montclair with 14 kills in her final home match. Freshman hitter ASIA LIVINGSTON (Paterson, NJ/Passaic County Tech) contributed eight kills, while BROOKSHIELD LAURENT (East Orange, NJ/Marylawn) added seven kills. KELLY MCGUIRE (Upper Saddle River, NJ/No. Highlands) led MSU with eight service aces, while Alvarado registered five aces. JENNIFER OLAN (Jersey City, NJ/Academic) recorded a total of 24 assists, while Joanna Cortez (Paterson, NJ/East Side) totaled a team-high 11 digs.

Next up for the Red Hawks is the first round of the NJAC Tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 4, in Glassboro, where MSU will visit third-seeded Rowan University (17-7, 6-2 NJAC). The host Profs defeated Montclair, 3-0, back on Sept. 30.
