Women's Basketball Knocks Off Penn State-Behrend

Erie, PA (12/13/03) - Sophomore forward EBONY ALLEN (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson) scored 13 points and freshman center STEPHANIE MACHIN (New Providence, NJ/New Providence) added 12 points and six rebounds as Montclair State captured the Winter Classic with a 67-41 victory over host Penn State-Behrend on Saturday afternoon in NCAA Division III women's basketball action.

VANESSA DEFREITAS (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) had eight points, four assists and five steals for the Red Hawks, who are now 8-0 this season and off to their best start the 1990-91 squad won its first 10 contests. DeFreitas was named the Most Valuable Player and was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Allen as Montclair won its third in-season tournament this year. The Red Hawks won the MSU Tip-Off Tournament on November 23.

In a close first half battle through the opening 13 minutes, PS-Behrend led 17-15 before DYETTE DILLARD (Willingboro, NJ/Willingboro) tied the score with a pair of free throws. PAM BARONE (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa Academy) then put Montclair in front with a three pointer and back-to-back layups by Machin and DeFreitas pushed MSU's lead to 24-17 with 4:52 to play before halftime. Angela Pellingrino cut the lead back to five with a layup, but AMANDA MULLANEY (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Ford) scored on a layup and Dillard drained a long three for to put the Red Hawks ahead, 29-19 with 3:07 to go. MSU led 35-23 at halftime.

Montclair led 39-25 in the opening moments of the second half and saw Behrend get within 46-33 with 13:45 remaining before going on a 17-2 run over the next seven minutes. Allen began the run with a three-pojnter and a three by KRISTEN POTENZONE (Totowa, NJ/DePaul Catholic) extended the lead to 56-36 with 10:40 left. SHIKEENA LYNARD (Carney's Point, NJ/Penns Grove) shot jumper made the score 58-36 and a three by RANDI HARRIS (Roosevelt, NY/Roosevelt) gave the Red Hawks' their largest lead at 63-35 with 6:29 to play.

Dillard and Potenzone each finished with seven points with Dillard collecting five steals and three assists.
