Women's Lacrosse Tops Puget Sound in Home Opener

Upper Montclair, NJ (03/17/03) - Junior CATHY HOMIEK (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) scored four goals and set up five others, and senior JODI GANGEMI (Fairfield, NJ/West Essex) tallied five goals and added two assists as the Montclair State University women's lacrosse team routed The University of Puget Sound (WA) today at Sprague Field, 18-7, in MSU's 2003 home opener.

The Red Hawks, who have won two straight games, are now 2-1 overall this season, while the visiting Loggers drop to 0-2.

Homiek tied the MSU mark for career points (175) set by Jeanelle Husth from 1997-2000, and leads Montclair in scoring this year with 22 points in three games.

Gangemi became the school's all-time leading goal scorer today with 153 career goals, breaking the mark of 151 goals held by Husth, and also has a team-leading 15 goals so far this season.

The duo of Gangemi and Homiek combined on three goals this afternoon, including the first goal of the game just 20 seconds after the opening face-off, with Gangemi also tallying the game-winning goal. MSU outshot UPS on the day, 27-17.

The two teams traded goals in the first 10 minutes of the first half, with Puget Sound taking a 4-3 lead before the Red Hawks erupted for 12 unanswered goals en route to a 15-4 advantage with just under 11 minutes remaining in regulation.

Freshman KRISTEN GISONDI (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) scored three goals for Montclair and collected two assists, while junior JESS HANN (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills) fired home three goals. Sophomore ANGELA GIAMPINO (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson), freshman ERIN BALINT (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) and junior LISA D'ARIES (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) scored the other MSU goals, while BRIDGET FITZSIMMONS chalked up an assist.

Sophomore goalkeeper LISA SMICKLO (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) had eight saves in the Montclair cage.
