ETHAN BOYD (Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy) was 3-for-4 with 3 RBI as Montclair State defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 9-2 Thursday afternoon in Troy, NY.
Junior PJ Baccarella (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) was 3-for-5 with 3 RBI for Montclair (5-7-1) who have now won five straight against Rensselaer. Pat Hughes (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem) was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI for R.P.I. (8-7) who have now lost three straight.
Boyd led off the game with a solo shot over the right field fence to give MSU a quick 1-0 lead. Boyd delivered again in the top of the fourth with a 2 RBI double down the left field line for a 4-0 MSU advantage.
Rensselaer pushed across two runs in the bottom of the sixth, aided by two Montclair miscues. Hughes doubled into the right-centerfield gap to score Flynn Cochran (Kent, WA/Kent-Meridan) and Ryan Meron (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh) who both reached on Montclair errors, for R.P.I.'s only runs of the afternoon.
Gogal (3-0) picked up the win for Montclair State. Gogal tossed eight innings allowing two runs, zero earned, and four hits. He also fanned six and walked no one. Gogal is now 2-0 versus Rensselaer, picking up his first win in 2001, as MSU defeated R.P.I. 11-1.
