Women's Lacrosse Moves Back to .500 in 13-10 Win Over Kean

Upper Montclair, NJ (04/12/03) - Senior attack JODI GANGEMI (Fairfield, NJ/West Essex) scored seven times and junior CATHY HOMIEK added three goals and four assists as Montclair State gained its first-ever Knickerbocker Conference win with a 13-10 triumph over Kean University on Saturday afternoon.

JESS HANN (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills) added three goals for the Red Hawks (5-5), who climbed back to the .500 mark with the win. Kelly Hamill (Manasquan, NJ) had eight goals for Kean, which fell to 5-4 overall, 0-3 in the Knickerbocker Conference, which began play this season.

Montclair State trailed 4-2 in the first half before running off four consecutive goals to take a 6-4 lead. Homiek began the run with an unassisted tally and Hann tied the game with 16:04 left in the period as she scored off a free position shot. Gangemi's second goal of the game gave MSU the lead at 5-4 and free position goal by Homiek made it a two-goal lead.

However, Kean responded with three straight over a three-minte span to re-gain the lead. Hamill scored twice and Juliet Fydrich scored unassisted with 2:07 left to put the Cougars on top. MSU answered back with two goals in the final minute. Gangemi scored her third with 0:51 remaining and Hann gave MSU an 8-7 halftim advantage as she scored with three seconds left.

In the second half, Kean pulled within 10-9 as Hamill scored with 19:08 left in the game. But Hann recorded the hat trick to boost the lead to 11-10 and Gangemi's sixth of the contest gave the Red Hawks a 12-9 lead with 13:24 to play. Hamill scored once more to cut the lead to two, but Gangemi resotred the lead to 13-10 with 9:14 to play.

LISA SMICKLO made a season-high 24 saves in goal for Montclair State.
