Upper Montclair, NJ (04/23/03) - Sophomore midfielder Valerie Barnhart (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) scored six goals as Stevens Tech won its sixth straight contest with an 11-7 victory over Montclair State at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.
Sophomore Rebecca Quinn (Damascus, MD/Damascus) added three goals and two assists for the Ducks (11-2, 3-0 KLC), who remained perfect in the newly-formed Knickerbocker Conference. Junior
JESS HANN (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills) had two goals and an assist for the Red Hawks (6-7, 2-2 KLC), who have dropped two straight.
Tied at 5-5 at halftime, Stevens scored the first three goals of the half to pull ahead, 8-5. Barnhart tallied her fifth of the game 3:28 into the period as she scored off an assist by Quinn. The Ducks extended the lead to two as Quinn scored on a free position shot and Juliet Pullis (Boonton Township, NJ/Mountain Lakes) made it a three-goal lead as took a feed from Quinn and scored with 22:09 left in the half.
Montclair would cut the lead to 8-7 with 16:10 play as
JODI GANGEMI (Fairfield, NJ/West Essex) scored the second of her two goals with 20:21 to play.
ANGELA GIAMPINO (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) then pulled MSU within one as she tallied her seventh goal of the season.
However, Stevens ended any hope of an MSU comeback as Quinn scored twice in a 24-second span. The first came on a free position shot with 14:36 to play and the second came as she took a pass from Lindy Gibbons (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy) and beat Red Hawk goaltender
LISA SMICKLO (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) to the lower right-hand side. Barnhart, who has 18 goals in her last three games, capped the Ducks' scoring with 5:58 to play.
BRIDGET FITZSIMMONS (Timonium, MD/Dulaney) had two goals for Montclair State, which was outshot in the game, 29-14. Smicklo made 15 saves while Stevens goaltender Kristine Conley (Ossining, NY/Our Lady of Victory) made two.
