Wayne, NJ - Catcher
SEAN JONES (Kutztown, PA) smacked three homers and junior left-hander
JEFF GOGAL (Kearny, NJ) carried a no-hitter through six innings as Montclair State routed William Paterson, 15-1, Thursday afternoon at Wightman Field.
Jones became the first MSU player to hit three homers in a game since Dave Kennedy set an NCAA record by crushing four on May 16, 1991, in the NCAA Tournament. He also drew two walks, including one intentional pass, as the Red Hawks (13-15-1, 8-7 NJAC) had 15 hits off four William Paterson (16-11, 7-6 NJAC) pitchers.
Gogal didn't need much offense to work with, holding the Pioneers hitless until center fielder Ron Hayward (Hoboken, NJ/Marist) blooped a single into short right field that was just out of the reach of a Red Hawk fielder. Overall, the southpaw struck out eight without a walk while yielding three hits and an unearned run over eight innings. In fact, he would have had a perfect game through six innings if not for hitting Hayward with a fourth-inning pitch.
Montclair State got on William Paterson senior lefty Dan Singer (Ridgefield Park, NJ) early. Singer, who lost his first regular-season game in two years while dropping to 4-1, allowed seven hits and six runs (four earned) through five innings, his shortest stint of the season. Jones hit two of his three homers off the Pioneer starter.
First baseman
JOE GIACOMIAZZIO (East Brunswick, NJ) finished 3-for-5 to keep up his hitting tear for the Red Hawks while left fielder
MATT BENEDETTI (Summit, NJ) hit a two-run homer in the seventh, his second of the season, and drove in three runs. Overall, every MSU starter had at least one hit.
For William Paterson, designated hitter Jason Tiseo (Bloomfield, NJ) hit a leadoff double in the eighth and eventually scored on a two-out error to get his team on the scoreboard. The Pioneers managed only four hits total while committing six errors.
