Upper Montclair, NJ (04/05/03) - Senior attacker JODI GANGEMI (Fairfield, NJ/West Essex) scored seven goals and added an assist, and junior CATHY HOMIEK (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) scored one goal and set up a school-record nine others as Montclair State University defeated Gwynedd Mercy (PA) College, 13-4, in NCAA Division III women's lacrosse action this afternoon at Sprague Field.
Montclair State improved to 4-4 overall, while the visiting Griffins fell to 2-6.
The Red Hawks fell behind, 1-0, in the first minute of play before scoring seven unanswered goals en route to a 7-2 halftime advantage. Gangemi scored three times in the opening 30 minutes for MSU, including her 40th goal of the season, while freshman midfielder KRISTEN GISONDI (Egg Harbor Township, NJ, Egg Harbor) and classmates BRIDGET FITZSIMMONS (Timonium, MD/Dulaney) and AMY RYAN (Sewell, NJ/St. James) scored once apiece.
Homiek had MSU's other first-half goal, while notching four assists. Gangemi then added four second-half goals while Gisondi and freshman
ERIN BALINT (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) scored Montclair's other goals in the final 30 minutes. Homiek added five assists, including her 50th point of the campaign as she broke her own assists record of eight set against Centenary College last April.
Freshman midfielder JENNIFER MATHESIAN (Aston, PA/Garnet Valley) scored twice for Gwynedd Mercy, while senior defender ALEXA HAZINSKY (Drexel Hill, PA/Prendergast) and senior attacker LAURA D'ASCENZO (Huntingdon Valley, PA/Lower Moreland) had the Griffins' other two tallies. Sophomore goalkeeper
LISA SMICKLO (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) had six saves in net for Montclair State, while sophomore DANIELLE PICINICH (Montville, NJ/Montville) made her Red Hawk lacrosse debut by facing no shots in the final two minutes of play. Sophomore goalkeeper GRACE SCULLY (Blackwood, NJ/Triton) had eight saves for Gwynedd Mercy.
MSU begins its inaugural Knickerbocker Lacrosse Conference season when it hosts Manhattanville (NY) College on Wednesday, April 9, at 4:00 p.m. at Sprague Field. Gwynedd Mercy next plays at Wesley College on Monday, April 7, at 4:00 p.m.
