Upper Montclair, NJ (04/09/03) - Senior midfielder SUSAN HORTON (Cutchogue, NY/Mattituck) tallied five goals and seven points and classmate LIZ McNAMEE (West Hartford, CT/Conard) scored six goals with an assist as Manhattanville (NY) College defeated Montclair State University, 18-11, in NCAA Division III women's lacrosse action this afternoon at Sprague Field.
It was the first-ever Knickerbocker Lacrosse Conference game for Montclair State, which fell to 4-5 overall and 0-1 in the conference this spring. The visiting Valiants improved to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in league play while winning their second straight game.
Montclair State took a 2-1 lead just under seven minutes into the contest before Manhattanville scored three straight times to take a 4-2 lead. MSU would tie the game with back-to-back goals, fall behind, and again knot matters at 5-5 before Manhattanvile scored twice to take a lead it would never relinquish. The Valiants led, 8-5, at halftime, and then broke open the contest by scoring seven of the first eight goals of the second half while outscoring MSU, 10-6, over the final 30 minutes of play.
Senior attacker JODI GANGEMI (Fairfield, NJ/West Essex) scored six goals for the Red Hawks, while junior CATHY HOMIEK (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) scored one goal and set up seven others to lead all players with eight points. Freshman midfielder KRISTEN GISONDI (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor) scored twice for Montclair, while sophomore midfielder ANGELA GIAMPINO (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) and junior attacker JESS HANN (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills) recorded MSU's other goals. Freshman DELIA STUBBS (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis Senior) notched two goals and an assist for Manhattanville, and frosh STACEY EURKUS (Concord, MA/St. Mark's School) scored twice.
Sophomore goalkeeper LISA SMICKLO (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) made three saves in net for Montclair State in 37:48 of work, while classmate DANIELLE PICINICH (Montville, NJ/Montville) had two saves in relief. Freshman ASHLEY TRIMBLE (Carleton Place, NY/Brewster) had seven saves for Manhattanville as the Red Hawks outshot the Valiants, 29-28.
MSU is now slated to visit Kean University in a conference game on Saturday, April 12, at 1:00 p.m. in Union, while Manhattanville will host Vassar that day at noon in Purchase, NY.
