Red Hawks Gain Split at Ithaca

Ithaca, NY - Freshman rigthander KRIS BOHNBERGER(Medford, NJ/Shawnee) tossed a complete-game five-hitter in the opener as the Montclair State baseball team earned a split with 30th-ranked Ithaca College on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Hawks won the first game, 5-0 before falling 6-3 in the nightcap. The split put MSU's record at 17-19-1 and will mark the first time since 1962 that Montclair will finish with a season record below .500. MSU closes out its 2003 season on Sunday, May 11th at SUNY-Cortland.

Bohnberger allowed just five singles as he tossed the first shutout of his career. The righty struck out two and walked three as he improved to 2-1 on the season winning his second straight decision.

After being no-hit through the first four innings, Montclair broke a scoreless tie in the fifth with four runs. Third baseman DANNY RODRIGUEZ (Monmouth, NJ/South Brunswick) was 2-for-3 with an RBI while shortstop MIKE WEISS (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape Regional) was 1-for-2 with and RBI.

In the second game, Ithaca scored a run in the second and extended the lead to 2-0 in the fourth before scoring twice more in the seventh to take a 4-0 lead. Montclair responded in the eighth inning as senior first baseman JOE GIACOMIAZZIO (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) belted a solo homer and MATT BENEDETTI (Summit, NJ/Summit) added an RBI triple. However the Bombers responded with two in their half of the eighth inning to put the game away.

ALEX THOMPSON (Whippany, NJ/Whippany) took the loss allowing two runs and six hits in five innings. The rigthander fanned two and walked three.

Rodriguez was 3-for-4 for Montclair State.
