MIKE HOGAN (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) scored 1:31 into overtime to lift Montclair State to a 3-2 win over Dowling College in the Sunkist Classic held at Rowan University on Saturday evening.
Freshman forward
RYAN MORGAN (Princeton, NJ/Princeton) scored twice in his first collegiate game for the Red Hawks (1-0-0), who battled back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to defeat the NCAA Division II semifinalist from a year ago.
Tied at 2-2 in the extra session, Hogan headed in a shot past Dowling goalkeeper Morten Larsen (Aalborg, Denmark). Last season, Hogan was a Regional All-American.
Dowling had taken a 1-0 lead 1:23 into the contest as Jose Danilo Vittorato (Sao Paulo, Brazil) notched a goal into the lower right corner of the net. Morgan tied the score 11 minutes later as he connected on a feed from Illyas Tasci (Paramus, NJ/Paramus). However, Dowling regained the lead just before half as Tom Nodland (Egersund, Norway) scored unassisted.
Morgan would re-tie the game in the 69th minute as he notched his second goal of the game heading in a pass from
KYLE HUGHES (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley).
Sophomore
DAVID AVILES (Dover, NJ/Dover) made four saves in goal for Montclair State, which outshot Dowling, 14-12. Larsen also had four saves.
The Red Hawks return to action on Sunday, August 31 with their second game in the Sunkist Classic as they face SUNY-Old Westbury at 5:00 pm.
