KEVIN BURKHARDT (Clifton, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) scored two goals as the Montclair State men's soccer team captured the Sunkist Classic championship with a 6-0 win over SUNY Old Westbury on Sunday evening.

MIKE HOGAN (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) was named the Most Valuable Player as the Red Hawks scored five times in a 13-minute span bridging the first and second halves. Hogan was joined on the All-Tournament Team by freshman
RYAN MORGAN (Princeton, NJ/Princeton) and sophomores
KYLE HUGHES (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) and
SEAN HORAN (Tinton Falls, NJ/Red Bank Catholic).
Hughes began the MSU scoring at 36:49 when he headed in a pass from
STEVEN BONURA (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) for a 1-0 lead. The Red Hawks needed just 10 seconds to extend the lead as
JESSEN VAN SYCKLE (Blairstown, NJ/North Warren) fed Burkhardt for the first of his two goals. Bonura had the final goal of the half as he tallied his first of the season off a pass from
RAY CICCONE (Sparta, NJ/Sparta).
In the second half, Morgan netted his third goal of the season at 46:49 and Hogan followed with a goal just under three minutes later to make the score 5-0. Burkhardt capped the MSU explosion with his second in th 72nd minute.
MSU dominated the contest, outshooting Old Westbury, 40-2. Red Hawk goalkeepers
DAVID AVILES (Dover, NJ/Dover) and
PHIL BATTIATO (Ringoes, NJ/Hunterdon Central) combined on the shutout.
Montclair returns to action on Saturday, September 6th as they make their first appearance at MSU Soccer Park. The Red Hawks will face McDaniel State in the Ramada Inn Cup beginning at 1:00 pm. MSU will face Roger Williams on Sunday, September 7th in the second game of the two-day tournament.
