Montclair Splits on First Day of Scranton Invitational

Scranton, PA (09/12/03) -- The Montclair State University volleyball team put a seven-match winless streak to rest by defeating College Misercordia (PA), 3-1, tonight in the first round of the 2003 Scranton Invitational. The Red Hawks dropped their first game to the Cougars, 30-26, but rebounded 30-27, 30-21 and 30-20 to win their first match since August 30. MSU then dropped their second match to host Scranton, 3-0. (30-18, 30-15, 30-23).

Against Misericordia, junior BROOKSHIELD LAURENT (East Orange, NJ/Marylawn) collected a Montclair State-high 20 kills and added five digs. Freshman ASIA LIVINGSTON (Paterson, NJ/Passaic County Tech) had 13 kills, three digs and a block. Junior JENNIFER OLAN (Jersey City, NJ/McNair) returned to the lineup and collected 28 assists while KELLY MCGUIRE (Upper Saddle River, NJ/No. Highlands) had five service aces. Olan had missed the previous five matches with a back injury. While Olan returned to the lineup, junior TIFFANY ACIZ (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) left the match with an injury after she collided with Livingston in the first game.

In the loss to Scranton, Livingston and senior CARMEN ALVARADO (Newark, NJ/Barringer) each had eight kills while Laurent and HEATHER ACIZ (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) added six kills apiece. Olan had 20 assists with JOANA CORTEZ (Paterson, NJ/East Side) recording a team-high nine digs.

Montclair State returns to action in the Scranton Invitational on Saturday with a pair of matches. The Red Hawks then return home on September 16th for their second NJAC contest of the season against New Jersey City University at 7:00 pm
