Upper Montclair, NJ (9/14/03) - Junior forward
STEPHANIE SABALIAUSKAS (Edison, NJ/St. Mary Academy) scored two goals and set up two others to power the Montclair State University women's soccer team to a 6-0 victory today against visiting Ferrum (VA) College at Sprague Field.
The game had been shifted from MSU Soccer Park at Pittser Field due to Saturday's inclement weather. MSU is now 3-1 overall this fall and 1-1 at home, winning all three of its games by shutout while Ferrum falls to 1-4-1. The six goals scored by Montclair State were the most since an 8-0 victory over NJCU last Oct. 30. MSU outshot Ferrum, 36-0, including 19-0 in the first half, while hitting three posts plus a crossbar.
Montclair dominated the opening 15 minutes of play with five shots and three corner kicks while not letting Ferrum advance past midfield, but the Red Hawks three offsides three times. Sabaliauskas put MSU up 1-0 at 15:55 off a corner kick, assisted by sophomore KELLY DUTKO (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert), who tallied MSU's lone goal in Friday's 2-1 double- overtime loss to NYU. Junior defender GABBY WHITE (Garwood, NJ/Johnson) then hit the left post from 40 yards out before Sabaliauskas collared the rebound and fed classmate LIZ D'ALTO (Cliffton, NJ/Clifton) for a tap-in at the same post at 23:26 to make it 2-0. Dutko then made it 3-0 with a head-in goal at 26:21 off a right-wing feed from sophomore LAUREN KOWALSKI (Clifton, NJ/Clifton), and Sabaliauskas then added her second score of the game and fourth of the season at 30:47.
MSU sophomore RUBY RUSSELL (Torrance, CA/South) notched her first goal of the fall at 46:55, launching a short shot just under the crossbar after taking a pass from Sabaliuaskas, the scoring rush having been started by JUSTINE CETINICH (Clifton, NJ/Clifton). The Red Hawks then made it 6-0 at 49:13 as senior JESSICA KOCH (Blackwod, NJ/Triton) scored off help from junior CASSIE NAHREBNE (Colonia, NJ/Kennedy) to close out the scoring. Freshman goalkeeper MEGAN GOODMAN (Rutledge, PA/Springfield) made 12 saves for the visiting Panthers, recording six stops in each half. MSU junior netminder SUSAN HINDS (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) did not face any shots in the opening 45 minutes before giving way to freshman goalie KRISTIN KUHMANN (Beachwood, NJ/Toms River South) for the second half, while Kuhmann also not facing any shots.
The Red Hawks are now off until next Saturday, Sept. 20, when they open their 2003 New Jersey Athletic Conference campaign against visiting Rutgers-Camden at 1:00 p.m. at MSU Soccer Park.
