Upper Montclair, NJ (9/20/03) - Junior forward
STEPHANIE SABALIAUSKAS (Edison, NJ/Mt. St. Mary Academy) scored from 10 yards out with just under four minutes remaining in the second overtime to lift Montclair State to a 1-0 victory over Rutgers-Camden in the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener for both teams at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.
It is the third consecutive year in which MSU (4-1, 1-0 NJAC) and the Lady Raptors (4-2-1, 0-1 NJAC) have gone to overtime to decide a contest. Two years ago at Sprague Field, MSU won by the identical score, while the two teams played to a scoreless tie last season.
Sabaliauskas netted her fifth goal of the season as she took a pass from
JESS AMENDOLA (Union, NJ/Union) at the 20-yard line on the left side and pushed to ball 10 yards before firing a shot that beat Rutgers-Camden goalkeeper Tracy Stonaker (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) to the far right post.
Montclair State dominated in the shots column as the Red Hawks outshot the Raptors, 22-4. However, MSU was unable to break through.
KELLY DUTKO (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) had a golden opportunity 3:21 into the match, but her shot hit the crossbar and bounced out. Amendola had two chances in the second half. She outraced Stonaker to a loose ball and flicked a shot that trickled just wide past the empty net. Amendola then hit the crossbar in the 72nd minute. Stonaker also stopped Sabaliasukas on a shot in the 88th minute.
Rutgers-Camden's best chance of the afternoon came in the 49th minute as Rachel Greenwald (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) took a direct kick and lofted a shot that MSU netminder
SUSAN HINDS (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) was able to come up with.
Hinds made two saves as she recorded her third shutout of the season. Stonaker, who entered the game in the second half, made seven saves. Starter Tracy Winter (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) had four saves for the Raptors.
