Camden, NJ (9/20/03) --- Sophomore back
MIKE HOGAN (Parsippany, NJ/ Parsippany) scored on a penalty kick and sophomore goalkeeper
EDGARD DINTEN (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) made several key saves as seventh-ranked Montclair State played to a 1-1 double-overtime tie with Rutgers-Camden in the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Saturday.
Montclair State stands at 6-1-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the NJAC. Rutgers-Camden, which stretches its undefeated string to five games, going 3-0-2 in that span, is 4-2-2 and 0-0-1.
Rutgers-Camden outshot Montclair State, 16-15, and had several chances to put the game away, but the Red Hawks received an outstanding performance by Dinten.
Dinten made eight saves, including several spectacular ones. Raptors freshman goalie Tim Giacobbe (Stratford, NJ/Sterling) made four saves, including a fine one in the second overtime off a header by junior back Dan Wells (Maywood, NJ/Hackensack). Montclair State scored its lone goal in the first half on a penalty kick by sophomore back Hogan. The kick was awarded for a trip in the box following a Rutgers-Camden giveaway in the back. Hogan converted the shot at 21:47 for his third goal of the season.
Hogan's shot, and two spectacular saves by Dinten off shots by freshman midfielder Mike Reed (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) and Magoffin, gave the Red Hawks a 1-0 halftime lead.
Rutgers-Camden tied the game at 61:52 when Tom Magoffin (Sewell, NJ/The King's Christian School) cut a pass back from the goal line to the top of the box for Baris Uslu (Delran, NJ/Triton), who scored his team-leading fourth goal.
Dinten again made several fine saves to preserve the tie, denying point-blank shots at the near post by senior forward Sean Presner (Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) and sophomore midfielder Kevin Ridgway (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) in one bang-bang sequence, robbing Reed by tipping a shot over the crossbar, and making a save on another point-blank shot by Presner.
With 2:30 left in regulation, Giacobbe made a fine save off a shot by freshman forward
RYAN MORGAN (Princeton, NJ/Princeton).
Both teams had chances in the second overtime, with Presner missing wide right early in the period and Giacobbe denying Wells on his header, followed by a shot from Montclair's junior midfielder
MATT CASWELL (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway), which sailed over the crossbar.
