Second Half Spurt Guides Men's Soccer Past Rutgers-Newark

Upper Montclair, NJ (9/24/03) - Junior Dan Wells (Maywood, NJ/Hackensack) scored two goals as eighth-ranked Montclair State scored four times in the second half en route to a 5-0 shutout of Rutgers-Newark in New Jersey Athletic Conference men's soccer action at MSU Soccer Park on Wednesday afternoon.

Steven Leonard (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) and JESSEN VAN SYCKLE (Blairstown, NJ/North Warren) each had a goal as the Red Hawks (7-1-1, 1-0-1 NJAC) scored three goals in a 7:22 span to post their first conference win of the season. Junior goalkeeper Carmine Cambareri (Cliffside Park, NJ/Fort Lee) had seven saves for the Scarlet Raiders (3-5-0, 0-2-0 NJAC).

Leonard gave Montclair State a 1-0 lead at 10:36 of the match as he headed-in a corner kick for his second goal of the season. The game stayed that way until halftime thanks in part to Cambareri, who made four of his seven stops in the first half.

In the second half, Montclair broke the game open with just under 20 minutes remaining as Wells scored twice in a 1:15 span. His first came off and assist from Leonard at 70:37. SEAN HORAN (Tinton Falls, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) knocked a free kick cross the field to Leonard, who then headed a perfect pass to Wells. Wells then finished off the play blasting a shot from the left side into the lower right portion of the net. He then added his second with another blast from the left side that beat Cambareri inside the near post. Van Syckle capped the MSU flurry with is first of the year at 77:59 off a corner kick cross from MATT CASWELL (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway).

DAVID AVILES (Dover, NJ/Dover) made three saves as he posted his third shutout of the season. Montclair State outshot the Scarlet Raiders, 20-11 and had a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks.
