Elizabethtown, PA (9/26/03) – The Montclair State volleyball team dropped its first two matches at the Blue Jay Classic held at Elizabethtown College on Friday evening.
MSU (4-17) lost to the host school, 3-0 and fell in four games to St. Mary's College (MD), 3-1.
Senior
CARMEN ALVARADO (Newark, NJ/Barringer) paced Montclair State with 13 kills in the loss to Elizabethtown (30-17, 30-19, 30-25). She also registered six digs, three assists and two block solos.
Junior
BROOKSHIELD LAURENT (East Orange, NJ/Marylawn Academy) added six kills while
JANIRE LEBRON (West New York, NJ/Memorial) and
KELLY MCGUIRE (Upper Saddle River, NJ/No. Highlands) each collected a team-high seven digs in the match. Junior setter
JENNIFER OLAN (Jersey City, NJ/McNair Academy) had 19 assists and four digs.
Against St. Mary's, MSU split the first two games, before losing the final two (17-30, 30-28, 12-30, 14-30). Alvarado posted perhaps her best match of the year with 16 kills, 10 service aces, four digs and two total blocks. Laurent and freshman
ASIA LIVINGSTON (Paterson, NJ/Passaic County Tech) each had six kills while
JOANA CORTEZ (Paterson, NJ/East Side) registered eight digs.
The Red Hawks continue action in the Blue Jay Classic on Saturday with a match against Ursinus College at 9:30 am. Montclair will then play once more in the tournament before going back to NJAC action on Tuesday, September 30th at Rowan University. Currently, Montclair is 1-3 in the conference.
