Montclair, NJ (10/23/04) - Sophomore defender
TODD TUMELTY scored the decisive goal in the second half to lift the Montclair State University men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over previously unbeaten Rutgers-Camden today in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match at MSU Soccer Park at Pittser Field.
The host Red Hawks, who snapped a three-game winless string, improve to 11-3-2 overall and 4-1-2 in the NJAC, while the visiting Scarlet Raptors, who last suffered a loss almost a year ago on Oct. 25, 2003, fall to 13-1-4 on the year and 4-1-2 in the conference.
MSU junior midfielder
SEAN HORAN launched a direct kick from the right side of the field to the left side of the Rutgers-Camden box, where Tumelty collected the ball and put it in off the outstretched hands of Rutgers sophomore goalkeeper David Cunningham at 61:28. Montclair had earlier taken a 2-0 lead on goals just 15 seconds apart in the first half, with sophomore forward Illyas Tasci scoring off an assist from classmate
BILL ANTHES at 21:30 before Rutgers-Camden inadvertently put the ball in its own net at 21:45.
The Scarlet Raptors got one goal back at 39:22 when junior forward Kevin Ridgway redirected a header by sophomore Ian Simmons past MSU junior goalkeeper
CHRIS OWEN, and then Rutgers tied the game at 47:19 when junior Devin Burgin scored off a set-up by freshman forward Ryan Evans.
Cunningham and Owen each finished with six saves on the day, as Rutgers-Camden outshot Montclair State, 17-11, and also held the edge in corner kicks (5-4).
Today also marked MSU Senior Day, as the Red Hawks honored defender Dan Wells and midfielder
ANDREW MACHO prior to their final home regular-season contest.
The Red Hawks return to action with a makeup game at Kings (PA) on Monday, Oct. 25, while the Scarlet Raptors finish up the conference slate at Ramapo on Wednesday, Oct. 27. MSU closes out its own regular season that day at Rutgers-Newark.
