Wilkes-Barre, PA (10/25/04) - Sophomore
BILL ANTHES (right) scored both goals, including the game-winner with 44 seconds remaining in overtime as Montclair closed out its non-conference schedule with a 2-1 victory over Kings College on Monday afternoon.
Montclair State improved to 12-3-2 on the year and recorded its second consecutive one-goal win over the Monarchs (8-8-1). Last year, Montclair posted a 1-0 win at MSU Soccer Park on a goal by
STEVE LEONARD.
After a scoreless first half, Montclair took a 1-0 lead with 35:02 remaining in the second stanza when Anthes scored of an assist from
MATT BEHEN. King's knotted the score just 0:56 later when Mark Ferentz scored off a crossing pass from Mike McGarry.
The teams played through the remainder of regulation and nearly two overtime periods without a goal and a tie score looming ahead. Dan Wells, however, directed a crossing pass to the far post where Anthes redirected the ball into the net after the entire Monarch defense had stopped play in anticipation of an offsides call which never came.
Goalkeeper
EDGARD DINTEN made five saves as he recorded the win. Dan Upton had nine saves for Kings, which was outshot in the contest, 16-8. Montclair State also held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Red Hawks, who have clinched a spot in the upcoming NJAC Tournament, will close out their league slate on Wednesday as they will travel to Rutgers-Newark to battle the Scarlet Raiders at 7:00 pm.
