Sabaliauskas Tallies Eight Points as Women's Soccer Tops Rutgers-Camden

Camden, NJ - Senior midfielder STEPHANIE SABALIAUSKAS assisted on the game's first two goals and added a hat trick as the Montclair State University women's soccer team defeated Rutgers University-Camden, 7-1, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday afternoon.

The victory helped the Red Hawks clinch the third seed for the upcoming NJAC playoffs. Montclair State is 7-7-1 overall and 5-2 in the NJAC. Rutgers-Camden falls to 11-5-2 and 2-4-1.

Sabaliauskas, who was the NJAC's Offensive Player of the Year in 2003, didn't take long to jump-start the Red Hawk attack. She sent a through ball behind the Raptor defense early in the game to spring junior forward JESS AMENDOLA on a breakaway. Amendola scored her team-leading sixth goal at 6:05.

Clinging to a 1-0 lead, the Red Hawks put the game away with three goals in a 2:30 span late in the first half. Sabaliauskas took a shot that was saved and deflected by Raptor keeper Tracy Stonaker, and junior forward RUBY RUSSELL followed up the rebound with a goal at 41:21. Moments later, Sabaliauskas scored off an assist from freshman midfielder MAUREEN SHOCKLEY, crossing a long shot from the left side that hit off the inside of the right post and bounced into the goal at 42:55. The Red Hawks completed their scoring barrage at 43:51 as junior forward KELLY DUTKO curved a corner kick off the far post and into the net.

Rutgers-Camden scored its lone goal off a corner kick by sophomore midfielder Kate Machion six minutes into the second half. Junior back Katlyn Pagaduan knocked in the goal at the far post for her third tally of the year. The Red Hawks ended any Raptor thoughts of a comeback when Sabaliauskas scored her second goal at 63:30, assisted by senior back SHIRAH ODEH. Junior midfielder LAUREN KOWALSKI scored at 72:40, assisted by Amendola, and Sabaliauskas completed her hat trick on an unassisted goal at 76:36.

The eight-point day gave her six goals and five assists for the season, jumping her into the team lead with 17 points. Sabaliauskas also had a hat trick against Ramapo Sept. 28, 2003, and scored the game-winning goal in overtime last season against the Lady Raptors in Montclair State's 1-0 victory (Sept. 20).

The game marked the most goals allowed by Rutgers-Camden since a 7-1 loss to The College of New Jersey Sept. 10, 2002. The six-goal margin of defeat was the largest since a 6-0 loss to The College of New Jersey Oct. 2, 2004.

Montclair State outshot Rutgers-Camden, 20-9. The Raptors held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
