Wayne, NJ (10/23/04) - After playing 70 minutes of regulation and two 15-minute overtimes, junior Mindy Coxe scored the clinching goal in a shootout as William Paterson knocked off No. 9 Montclair State, 2-1, Tuesday evening at Wightman Stadium.
By virtue of outscoring the Red Hawks (12-4, 4-2 NJAC), 3-0, in the shootout, the Pioneers (11-3, 4-2 NJAC) earned a one-goal margin of victory. It is believed to the first time William Paterson played in a shootout, while Montclair State last did so on Nov. 1, 2003, in a 1-0 loss to Juniata.
Senior Kelly Harchetts stopped all three stroke attempts by MSU, while junior Deanna Wall and senior Cheryl Naurath each scored before Coxe provided the game-winning shot. Prior to the shootout, it was an evenly contested game with plenty of opportunities for each side.
William Paterson seized a 1-0 led at the 21:09 mark when sophomore Brandi Kavaliauskas deflected a Naurath shot off a penalty corner for her seventh tally this season. Montclair State answered back at the 48:24 mark when
KRISTEN SWARTZ snared a loose ball in front of the goal cage and slammed it home for her second score of the year.
Neither team was able to convert in overtime, although Montclair State did have two shot attempts that were blocked and went wide, respectively, in the second overtime. In the first extra session,
Montclair State junior Elyse Winkle made a key defensive save on a Naurath shot that would have won the game.
Montclair State junior goalkeeper
ROBYN APICELLI put aside nine shots overall in the loss. Harchetts made five saves. Overall, the Pioneers owned a 15-11 edge on shots and the Red Hawks earned a 15-13 advantage on penalty corners.
