Women's Soccer Earns 4-0 Shutout Over Rutgers-Newark

Montclair, NJ (10/27/04) - The Montclair State women's soccer team got goals from four different players as the Red Hawks closed out their regular season with a 4-0 win over Rutgers-Newark in New Jersey Athletic Conference women's soccer action at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.

STEPHANIE SABALIAUSKAS got her 10th goal of the season and seventh in the last three games as the Red Hawks won their fourth straight and finished the regular season at 9-7-1, including a 6-2 mark in the NJAC. Ashley Woodruff made three saves for the Scarlet Raiders (9-7-1, 1-7 NJAC), who lost their second straight.

JESS AMENDOLA got Montclair State on the board as she snapped a scoreless tie at the 29:36 mark with her seventh goal of the season. LAUREN KOWALSKI served a cross that bounced off a defender and right in front to Amendola, who tapped in the ball for the 1-0 lead. Sabaliauskas extended the lead to two goals just under nine minutes later as she collected a pass from SHIRAH ODEH and fired a shot from 22 yards out that beat Woodruff to the right post.

Meanwhile, the MSU defense clamped down on Rutgers-Newark, not allowing a shot in the game as Montclair took 23 in the contest. The Red Hawks added two more goals in the second half as KELLY DUTKO fired in a shot from 28 yards out at 75:31, and LIZ D'ALTO notched her sixth tally of the season with 10:56 to play.

Kristen Kuhmann recorded her sixth shutout.

Montclair State now advances to the post-season as the Red Hawks will be the No. 3 seed in the 2004 New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament, which gets underway on Saturday, October 30. MSU will host sixth-seeded Rutgers-Camden at MSU Soccer Park at 2:30 pm. Those teams met last weekend as Montclair posted a 7-1 victory behind a three-goal, two-assist performance from Sabaliauskas.
