Montclair, NJ (09/29/04) - Senior defender
LISA SMICKLO scored with 4:28 remaining in the first overtime period as the Montclair State University field hockey team, ranked sixth in NCAA Division III, edged Kean University, 1-0, tonight at Sprague Field in New Jersey Athletic Conference action.
MSU, which has now won three straight games, improves to 10-1 overall and 4-0 in NJAC play, while the visiting Cougars fall to 8-3 on the year and 2-1 in the league. Montclair State has now defeated Kean in overtime three consecutive seasons.
Smicklo's goal culminated an MSU rush that saw Kean junior goalkeeper Concetta Valerio stop a shot by Red Hawk freshman forward
JENNIFER TANIS. The rebound caromed out to the right, where Smicklo put it home for her second goal of the campaign.
Valerio finished with eight saves for the Cougars, while junior goalkeeper
ROBYN APICELLI made three stops for Montclair, which outshot Kean, 11-8, and also had more penalty corners, 10-5.
MSU closes out a six-game homestand this Saturday when it hosts top-ranked Messiah (PA) at 1:00 p.m., while Kean hosts The College of New Jersey on Oct. 12.
