No. 2 Messiah Tops Sixth-Ranked Montclair State

Montclair, NJ (10/09/04) - Junior forward Aftan Fisher scored a pair of goals as second-ranked Messiah College knocked off No. 6 Montclair State, 5-1, in a battle of Top 10 field hockey teams at Sprague Field this afternoon.

Danae Chambers had a goal and an assist for the Falcons (10-2), who have won two straight following a one-goal loss to defending national champion Salisbury. ERIN BALINT netted the lone goal for Montclair State (10-2), which saw its three-game win streak snapped.

Lindsey Hunter got the Messiah on the board with 27:02 to play in the first half a she deflected in a shot from Ashley Lobach past Montclair State goalkeeper ROBYN APICELLI. The Falcons then extended the lead to 2-0 just under four minutes later as Chambers took a pass of a penalty corner and made two moves before unleashing a shot into the cage. Messiah took a 2-0 lead into the break. In the second half, Fisher pushed the lead to 3-0 with 19:42 to go in the second half. Chambers fed Fisher on a perfect pass to the left side. Fisher then one-timed the shot into the cage.

Seven minutes later, Fisher got her second and 14th of the season as she again took a pass from Chambers, this time on the right side and scored inside the right post. Jenna Schwind closed out the Messiah scoring with her 10th of the season off an assist from Ashley Polet.

Montclair State finally broke through with 48 seconds left as the Red Hawks were awarded a penalty stoke. Balint stepped to the line and fired a shot inside the upper right corner for her sixth tally of the season.

Erica Nelson made seven saves for Messiah while Apicelli collected four. Messiah outshot the Red Hawks, 15-12, with MSU holding an 11-8 advantage in penalty corner, including eight in the second half.
