Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Battles but Falls Against Top-Ranked Trinity

San Antonio, TX (10/09/04) - Sophomore forward RYAN MORGAN scored a goal and 20th-ranked Montclair State battled hard, but it wasn't enough as the Red Hawks fell to defending national champion and top-ranked Trinity University in the Trinity University National Invitational Tournament on Saturday evening.

The loss snapped Montclair's three-game winning streak and left MSU at 10-2-1 on the season. Trinity (13-0) ran its winning streak to 37 consecutive victories dating back to last season when it captured the NCAA title.

The 3-1 victory was the Tigers' closest game this season.

Trinity jumped on top early as Cullen Davies took a pass from Andrew Wade and knocked it in past MSU goalkeeper CHRIS OWEN at 2:49 into the contest. The Tigers would extend the lead as Davies once again had a hand in the score this time as playmaker feeding Eddie Ho for the tally at 33:59.

That's the way the game stood as Montclair State withstood a barrage of shots by Trinity as the Tigers outshot MSU, 20-2 in the first half.

In the second half, Montclair cut into the deficit as Morgan notched his team-leading seventh goal of the season off an assist from Owen at 54:44.

But that would be as close as the Red Hawks would get as Trinity turned up the pressure and pushed the lead back to two goals with 11:01 left. Kyle Altman scored the goal off an assist from Alex Woods.

Owen, who was named Co-MVP of the tournament, made eight saves for Montclair State which kept the game close despite being outshots, 36-8. Trinity also held a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks. Matt Handy made three saves for Trinity.

The Red Hawks return to action on Wednesday, October 13 as they travel to Pomona, NJ to take on the Ospreys of Richard Stockton at 7:30 pm.
