Kowalski Scores Twice as Women's Soccer Moves On to NCAA Tournament Second Round

Montclair, NJ (11/10/04) – Junior midfielder LAUREN KOWALSKI scored a pair of goals, and classmate KELLY DUTKO added two assists as Montclair State blanked Bay Path College (MA), 4-0, in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Tournament at MSU Soccer Park on Wednesday afternoon.

The victory sends Montclair State, which is making its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament, into the second round where they will host undefeated and third-ranked Messiah College (18-0-1) on Saturday, November 13 at 1:00 pm. Messiah, the 2002 national runner-up, received a first-round bye. The Falcons are the Commonwealth Conference champion.

Kaylan Van Brookhoven and SHIRAH ODEH each had a goal for the Red Hawks (11-7-3), who upped their unbeaten streak to eight games. Denise Larochelle made 20 saves in the game for the Wildcats, who fell for just the third time this season and finished the year, 20-3-1. Bay Path earned its way into the NCAA Tournament as the champion of the North Atlantic Conference.

Bay Path had the first scoring chance of the game as Tianna Carr was stopped by Kristen Kuhmann, and Amanda Janik had a one-on-one shot that went wide. Montclair State would then break out on top at the 12:06 mark as Kowalski dribbled down the right side toward the goal before lofting a shot that bent inside the upper left-hand corner for the first goal of the game.

It was Kowalski's third of the season and the first by Montclair State since the opening round of the NJAC Tournament on October 30 - a span of 265:32. The Red Hawks won both the NJAC semifinal and championship game without scoring a goal, winning each on penalty kicks, including a 3-1 triumph over The College of New Jersey in the title contest. That win gave MSU the NJAC title and automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Just over four minutes later, on a corner kick, Dutko served the ball into the middle of the box where VanBrookhoven perfectly headed the ball past Larochelle for her first tally of the season and a two-goal MSU advantage. Montclair continued to apply the pressure as it took 17 shots in the opening half with Larochelle making six saves.

In the second half, Montclair kept the offense going as it added 22 more shots and finished the game with 39. Larochelle made 14 saves in the period but could not stop Montclair State from adding to its lead as Kowalski netted her second of the contest. Off another corner kick, Kowalski settled the ball from five yards out before unleashing a shot that beat Larochelle to the left side at 65:51. Montclair State then completed its scoring with 16:10 to play as Odeh took a pass from Dutko and fired a shot to the right side.

Kuhmann finished with three saves for Montclair State as she recorded her ninth shutout of the season.
