Montclair, NJ (11/16/04) - The Montclair State men's and women's swimming and diving teams posted their second straight sweep as the Red Hawks downed Adelphi University in their home opener at the Panzer Pool on Wednesday evening. The MSU men's team (3-2) posted its second straight win as they toppled the Panthers, 111-86 while the women's squad (3-3) captured its third straight victory with a 115-89 triumph. Adelphi fell to 2-2 on the men's side with the women dropping to 2-3 on the year.
On the men's side, freshman
RYAN GORSKY and
RICKY MILLER paced the Red Hawks with a pair of wins. Gorsky captured the 1000 freestyle (10:56.43) and the 500 freestyle (5:18.03) while Miller took top honors in the short freestyles. Miller won the 200 with a time of 1:51.45 and later finished first in the 100 with a time of 50.50. For Adelphi, Charles Castillo was a triple-winner as he won the 200 IM (2:10.85), 200 breaststroke (2:19.67) and helped the 400 medley relay team to a win (3:48.46).
Despite winning only four of the 11 events contested, Montclair State used its depth to earn the women's victory. Freshman
KRISTINE BATES led the Red Hawks with three of the wins as she captured the 50 and 100 freestyle with times of 25.97 and 58.32, respectively. Bates then swam the third leg on the winning 400 freestyle relay squad (4:05.00). Junior
ADRIENNE RICHARDI won the other event for Montclair - 1000 freestyle (12:22.35). Kathy Dodd, Jerri Lester and Amanda Knapp were each triple-winners for the Panthers. The trio swam on the winning 400 medley relay (4:25.88) before taking two individual races. Knapp won the 200 breaststroke (2:41.63) and 200 butterfly (2:34.24) with Dodd taking first in the 200 freestyle (2:02.89) and 500 freestyle (5:39.37). Lester won the 200 IM (2:23.27) and the 200 backstroke (2:20.47).
