Women's Soccer Outlasts Stockton in PK's, Advances to NJAC Championship

Pomona, NJ (11/3/04) - Sophomore midfielder DARA NALVEN scored in the eighth round of penalty kicks as third-seeded Montclair State advanced to the NJAC Championship Game for the third straight season as the Red Hawks knocked off No. 2 seed Richard Stockton in penalty kicks, 7-6 on Wednesday evening.

Montclair State (10-7-2) will face a familiar foe in top-seed and five-time defending champion The College of New Jersey on Saturday, November 6, at 6:00 pm at Lions Stadium in Ewing. Last year, TCNJ topped MSU 1-0 at Sprague Field, and in 2002 the Lions posted a 3-0 victory at home.

TCNJ advanced following a 5-0 win over fourth-seeded Rowan University. The winner of the NJAC Championship earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Kristen Kuhmann made seven saves during the game and made two more during the penalty kicks. Kuhmann stopped Stacey Chabot in the third round, and MSU had a chance to win the game in the fifth and final round; however, JUSTINE BARBATO's shot hit the crossbar, prolonging the drama.

The contest then went to the sudden-death component, and the teams exchanged successful tries in rounds six and seven before Kuhmann came up with a save against Jaci Greenstein. Nalven then stepped up and drilled the game-winner.

The win by Montclair State avenged a 1-0 overtime loss to the Ospreys at Sprague Field back on October 13. Last season, the Red Hawks also fell to Richard Stockton in the ECAC Metro Championship Game as Stockton won in penalty kicks, 4-2.
