Women's Soccer Claims First NJAC Championship, Advances to the NCAA Tournament

Ewing, NJ - The Montclair State women's soccer team completed their remarkable end-of-the-year turnaround as the Red Hawks captured their first New Jersey Athletic Conference title, dethroning five-time defending champion The College of New Jersey in penalty kicks, 3-1.

The win catapulted MSU (10-7-3) into their first NCAA Division III Tournament, which will begin on Wednesday, November 10. Pairings and sites will be announced on Sunday, November 7.

On October 14, Montclair State stood at 5-7-1, but since then, the Red Hawks are unbeaten in their last seven, including two thrilling games in the NJAC Tournament. After beating sixth-seed Rutgers-Camden in the opening round, Montclair reached the championship game for the third consecutive year, downing second-seeded Richard Stockton in penalty kicks, 7-6 as DARA NALVEN scored the decisive goal.

Against TCNJ, sophomore goalkeeper Kristen Kuhmann, who shined as she kept the Lions off the scoreboard, made 14 saves as the Red Hawks were outshot in the contest, 28-5. Kuhmann made eight in the first half and added five in the second and one in the first overtime period.

Meanwhile, despite getting only the five shots, MSU nearly ended the game early in the second OT as KELLY DUTKO hit the crossbar midway through the period.

The game went into penalty kicks, and for the second straight game, MSU came away on top. TCNJ's Stephanie Peters hit the post on the first round, and SHIRAH ODEH put Montclair up 1-0. On the second round, Kuhmann came up with a save against Amy Swiatecki-Mccabe, and Dutko made it 2-0 for the Red Hawks. Lauren DiStefano of TCNJ and MSU's JESS AMENDOLA each traded goal in Round 3, setting up the most dramatic moment in its history.

Facing the Lions' Dana DiBruno, Kuhmann made the stop, sending the MSU sideline into a frenzy as they poured onto the field.

The victory was just Montclair State's second against the Lions in 24 meetings since the two began their series in 1990 and the first at TCNJ. Among those losses were two straight defeats in the 2002 and 2003 NJAC title game, including a 1-0 loss at Sprague Field. In the 1999 NJAC Tournament, Montclair State and the Lions played to a 1-1 tie; however, TCNJ prevailed 4-3 in penalty kicks.
