Balanced Scoring Sends Women's Basketball Past CCNY in CUNY/NJAC Matchup

New York, NY (12/11/04) -Sophomore forward FERIN CATLETT scored eight points and pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds as Montclair State routed City College of New York, 80-31, in the NJAC/CUNYAC Challenge on Saturday afternoon.

JESSICA GARRABRANT and AMANDA MELO each had nine points for the Red Hawks (5-3), who have won three of their last four games. Montclair had eight players scored eight or more points in the game.

Montclair State raced out to a 12-0 lead in the first five minutes of the contest as STEPHANIE MACHIN had the first four points and Garrabrant scored on a layup for a 6-0 lead. AMANDA MULLANEY pushed the lead to eight points with Garrabrant making the score 10-0 as she put back a missed shot. MICHELLE MADEJ capped off the run with a short jumper.

Kimberly Neos hit a three-pointer to get the Beavers on the board, but Madej answered with the next four points to make the score 16-3 and Montclair led by double-digits the rest of the way.

Machin finished with eight points as did Madej and guard MARIA COPELL, whoalso added three rebounds and three assists off the bench. Garrabrant grabbed seven rebounds as Montclair State outrebounded CCNY, 52-29.

The Red Hawks also capitalized on 28 CCNY turnovers turning the miscues into 36 points. MSU also held the Beavers to just 26 percent shooting (10-of-39), including 4-of-19 from the free-throw line.

Montclair State returns to action on Friday, December 17 as they Red Hawks close out the calendar year at the Hilton-Keystone Classic at Keystone College. MSU take on Chowan College in the first round at 6:00 pm with host Keystone facing Maine-Ft. Kent in the other game.

The tournament concludes on Saturday, December 18 with the consolation and championships games slated for 1:00 and 3:00 pm, respectively.
