Montclair, NJ (12/04/04) - Junior guard
SHIKEENA LYNARD drained a foul-line jumper with seven seconds remaining as Montclair State escaped with a 48-47 victory over Rutgers-Newark in New Jersey Athletic Conference women's basketball action at Panzer Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore forward
STEPHANIE MACHIN had 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists for the Red Hawks (3-2, 2-1 NJAC), who scored the final four points in winning for the second time in three games.
Toni Roselli finished with 12 points off the bench for the Scarlet Raiders (3-3, 0-2 NJAC), who nearly pulled off the victory following a dismal start. Rutgers-Newark, which has dropped two straight, was held scoreless for the first eight minutes of the contest and managed only one field goal in the first half.
Despite its early troubles, Rutgers-Newark used a solid free-throw shooting effort to stay close and then pulled ahead with a 13-3 run to take its first lead of the contest, 47-43 with 2:37 left as Roselli hit one of two foul shots. But Montclair State cut the lead to three as Machin answered with a free throw and she then made it a one-point game, 47-46, with a layup at 1:09. After a miss by the Scarlet Raiders, Montclair gained possession with 26 seconds left and ran the clock down to 13 ticks, where Lynard misfired on a three-pointer. However,
JESSICA GARRABRANT got the rebound keeping the possession alive.
Garrabrant flipped the ball to
JESSICA HORAN, who drove along the baseline before kicking the ball back to Lynard, who drained the jumper for the lead. After consecutive timeouts, Rutgers-Newark could not get a shot attempt off as the final buzzer sounded.
Roselli, who had 11 points in the final half was key in that 13-3 run by the Scarlet Raiders as she scored six of the points. Her two free throws ignited the run at the 8:45 mark and her three-pointer with 5:59 to go put Rutgers-Newark in front.
Eni Fageyinbo had 10 points and eight rebounds for Rutgers-Newark, which trailed only 23-18 at the half despite its shooting woes. The Scarlet Raiders, who entered the game shooting just 56 percent at the charity stripe, connected on 16-of-20 attempts and went 19-of-25 for the game. While Rutgers-Newark was hot from the foul line, Montclair State was the complete opposite as it made only 6-of-18 attempts (33 percent).
Freshman
JENNIFER RUSSELL had seven points and six rebounds for MSU while Garrabrant added eight and five boards. Lynard collected five points and three blocked shots.
The Red Hawks go back on the road for its next five games beginning Monday evening as MSU travels to Hackettstown to face Centenary College at 7:00 pm. Rutgers-Newark will host William Paterson on Wednesday, December 8 at 6:00 pm.
