Mahwah, NJ (12/08/04) -Janine Cappadona scored 22 points and Keona Palmer added 14 and eight rebounds as Ramapo College knocked off Montclair State, 63-58, in New Jersey Athletic Conference women's basketball action on Wednesday evening.
STEPHANIE MACHIN finished with 24 points and eight rebounds for Montclair State (4-2, 2-2 NJAC), which had its two-game winning streak snapped. Ramapo improved to 5-2 overall, 2-2 in the conference.
The Red Hawks trailed 28-27 at halftime, but outscored the Roadrunners, 8-2 to begin the half to build a five-point lead. Machin scored six points in the spurt as MSU took a 35-30 lead with 16:46 left.
But Ramapo chipped away at the lead and moved back in front for good with 13:09 to play as it scored eight straight points to tak at 44-38 lead with 11:15 to play. Cappadona hit two free throws to ignite the run and Danielle Hunt put Ramapo in front, 39-38 with a short jumper. Palmer added a three-point play before Cappadona capped the spurt with two foul shots.
Montclair State would tie the game at 46-46 with 9:17 remaining as Machin sank a pair of freee throws, however, Ramapo answered again as Palmer regained the lead with a jumper and Hunt hit from short range to push the advantage to 50-46 with 7:19 left.
A free throw by Lisa Fischman put the Roadrunners up 53-47 and Kristina Cwiekalo gave Ramapo its largest lead as she converted a three-point play for a 56-47 lead with 5:02 to go.
Montclair State would get within 57-54 with 58 seconds as Machin hit one free throw, but Cappadona sealed the game for Ramapo making four free throws while Vanessa Vargas added two in the last second for the final margin.
JESSICA GARRABRANT had nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds for Montclair State, which struggled shooting on the evening. The Red Hawks shot just 21-of-61 from the field and 16-of-28 at the free-throw line.
AMANDA MULLANEY had 12 points and seven rebounds whith
SHIKEENA LYNARD adding six points and four rebounds.
Fischman had nine rebounds for Ramapo while Hint collected six points and seven caroms.
Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, December 11 as the Red Hawks take part in the NJAC/CUNYAC Challenge. MSU will face the Beavers of City College of New York at 2:15 pm in Manhattan on Saturday. The game is the second of four contests at CCNY.
