Doyen Goal in OT Lifts Red Hawks Past Babson, 9-8

Montclair, NJ (03/13/04) -Sophomore attacker RICH DOYEN (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) scored off a rebound 34 seconds into the third overtime as Montclair State remained unbeaten with a 9-8 win over Babson College in NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse action at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.

CHRIS MEIXNER (Hamburg, NJ/Vernon) had three goals and one assist, and BRIAN FISCHER (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) added two goals as the Red Hawks squandered a four-goal, fourth-quarter lead, but rebounded to improve to 3-0 on the season.

Tim Armenta (Kennebunk, MR/Berwick Academy) had three goals for the Beavers (1-1), who trailed 8-4 heading into the final period.

Tied at 8-8 after the third overtime, Montclair State took control of a loose ball and moved across midfield where Babson was whistled for a slashing penalty. MSU took advantage of the opportunity as JOHN DELLA PESCA (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) got off a shot that Beaver goalkeeper Dave Frascogna (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) stopped. However, the ball bounced out to Doyen, whose ensuing shot beat Frascogna to the upper-left portion of the cage.

Babson made a furious comeback in the fourth as Armenta scored twice in a 32 second span to cut the Red Hawks' lead to 8-6 with 7:49 to play. Jonathan Wyeth (New London, NH/Kearsarge) then made it a one-goal game as he scored during a two-man advantage 55 seconds later and Sean Sullivan (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) tied the game with 4:21 to play.

Both teams had opportunities in the first two overtime periods, but Frascogna and ALAN ANNAZONE (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) each came up with two saves apiece to keep the game deadlocked.

Annazone had eight saves for Montclair State, which outshot Babson, 37-36 and scored on four of its five extra-man opportunities. Frascogna finished with 13 saves for Babson which got two goals from Wyeth.
