Red Hawks Survive Against Susquehanna, 12-10

Selinsgrove, PA - A four-goal run spanning halftime helped Montclair State rally for a 12-10 victory over Susquehanna in non-conference men's lacrosse action at a rain-soaked Admissions Field on Monday afternoon.

JOHN DELLA PESCA scored three goals, including a key man-down tally, while three other players scored twice as the Red Hawks (8-2) held the Crusaders (6-3) without a shot for most of the fourth quarter to keep Susquehanna from another fourth-quarter comeback.

Senior Scott Hodgson (Point Pleasant, NJ/Ramapo H.S.) scored four goals for the Crusaders while junior Dan St. Ours (Saco, ME/Thornton Academy) added a goal and four assists in a losing effort.
After Matt Miceli gave the Crusaders a 1-0 on a man-up goal just 2:52 into the first quarter, the Red Hawks used goals from KEVIN GONDRES , WILBUR THORSEN and Della Pesca to take a 3-1 lead with 9:38 left in the first.

After the teams exchanged two goals each, the Crusaders scored four straight with Hodgson netting three and St. Ours one to give Susquehanna a 7-5 lead with 3:10 left in the second quarter. Della Pesca pulled Montclair State within 7-6 on his second of the game with 28 seconds left in the half.

The Red Hawks came out in the third quarter and scored three straight to take a 9-7 lead, with RICH DOYEN, CHRIS MEIXNER and Luigi DiSimone finding the back of the cage. Miceli scored with 2:49 left in the third to cut the Montclair State lead to 9-8, but Della Pesca provided the backbreaking tally with a man-down goal with 1:49 left in the quarter to give Montclair a 10-8 edge.

A goal by Bobby Costa with 1:10 left in the third pulled the Crusaders within 10-9 as the fourth quarter began, but BRIAN FISCHER restored the Red Hawks' two-goal lead with 10:31 left in the game. From there, the Montclair defense surrendered little while the offense put the game away with 1:44 to play on Meixner's second goal of the game.

Hodgson closed out the scoring with his second man-up goal of the day with six seconds left to give him a team-high 29 goals this season and 111 for his career.

Fischer and Doyen each finished with two goals and two assists for the Red Hawks while BRIAN SHADIACK recorded a team-high seven ground balls.

Junior Justin Mason (Wilmington, DE/Tatnall School) finished with a goal and three assists for the Crusaders, and Costa (Chatham, NJ/Chatham H.S.) led all players with nine ground balls.
