Little Falls, NJ - Senior shortstop PJ Baccarella (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) went 5-for-5 with two RBI while senior lefthander Lou Wieben (Secaucus, NJ/St. Mary's) tossed seven solid innings as Montclair State posted a season high for hits and runs in a 16-3 victory over DeSales University at Yogi Berra Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
MATT BENEDETTI (Summit, NJ/Summit) had a home run and three RBI off the bench as the Red Hawks (15-8) won the 1,300th game in their 71-plus seasons of baseball. Montclair State is 1300-647-24 since it first season in 1929.
The Red Hawks, who collected 21 hits in the contest, scored five times in the third to snap a scoreless tie.
MIKE WEISS (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) drove in two with a base hit and
ROB BLACKBURN (Sussex, NJ/Vernon) lined a two-run double for a 4-0 lead.
MARC DECASTRO (Haddon Heights, NJ/Paul VI) accounted for the final run with an RBI single.
DeSales got a run back in the fourth as Nolan Neiman (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) brought home a run with a sacrifice fly, however, MSU responded with three runs in their half of the inning.
TOMMY WARTH (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) plated two runs with a bases-loaded single and Blackburn lofted a sacrifice fly for an 8-1 lead. The following inning, Benedetti had an RBI double and Baccarella made it 10-1 with an RBI single. Weiss then doubled to left field to score Baccarella.
Montclair State added two runs in the seventh as Greg D'Alessandro (Verona, NJ/Verona) brought home a run on a fielder's choice and
PAUL SAMMARCO (Bergenfield, NJ/Bergenfield) drew a bases-loaded walk. Benedetti belted his second home run of the year, a two-run shot, in the eighth and Baccarella, who also scored three times in the game, capped of his day with an RBI single as MSU took a 16-2 lead. Mickey Csedrik (Lyndhurst, NJ/Lyndhurst) drove in the final run for DeSales in the ninth as he walked with the bases loaded.
Wieben (4-1) went the first seven innings allowing two runs and three hits. He fanned five and walked four. Pete Quarracino (Kimberton, PA/Phoenixville) took the loss (2-1).
Benedetti, Weiss and Blackburn each finished with three RBI for Montclair State. Weiss had three hits in the game as did Benedetti and
ETHAN BOYD (Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy). Sophomore outfielder
MIKE HALLIGAN (Pompton Plains, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
