Montclair, NJ - Freshman attacker
LUIGI DESIMONE (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) scored three goals, including the game-winner with 5:57 left in the third quarter, as the Montclair State University men's lacrosse team rebounded from three two-goal deficits and scored the game's last six goals to defeat Kings Point University, 10-6, tonight at Sprague Field.
Montclair State improves to 10-2 overall and 3-2 in the Knickerbocker Lacrosse Conference, while Kings Point falls to 4-9 on the year and 1-4 in KLC play. It marks the first time that MSU has posted 10 or more victories in back-to-back campaigns since 1991-1992.
Freshman attacker Sean Dougherty (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) scored Kings Point's first five goals, putting the visiting Mariners up, 2-0, with 1:17 remaining in the first quarter. After DeSimone got MSU on the board with 37 seconds left, Dougherty regained Kings Point's two-goal advantage with just three seconds remaining in the period. Dougherty would then give the Mariners a 4-2 lead before freshman midfielder
WILBUR THORSEN (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) and sophomore attacker
RICH DOYEN (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) scored just 1:26 apart late in the second quarter to pull the host Red Hawks into a 4-4 tie at the half.
Dougherty and freshman attacker Jim Flannery (N. Massapequa, N.Y./Holy Trinity) would boost Kings Point to a 6-4 lead with goals in the first 1:20 of the third quarter, but MSU then rattled off six consecutive scores for its third straight victory.
Montclair State junior attacker
KEVIN GONDRES (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) and DeSimone scored exactly two minutes apart to tie the game, 6-6, before DeSimone completed his hat trick just over five minutes later to put the Red Hawks ahead for good. Doyen made it 8-6 with 1:06 left in the third quarter, and juniors
MICHAEL EARL (South Brunswick, NJ/South Brunswick) and
ANTHONY ILER (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) then tallied in the final period for the Red Hawks to close out the scoring.
Gondres finished with a goal and three assists for Montclair, while junior attacker Matt McCarthy (Germantown, PA/Seneca Valley) posted three assists for Kings Point. MSU outshot Kings Point, 40-35, while the Mariners won 14 of 19 face-offs. Kings Point went 0-for-4 in extra-man opportunities, while MSU was 0-for-6 with a man advantage.
Freshman goalkeeper Scott Hughes (Plano, Texas/Plano West) finished with 16 save for the Mariners, half of those coming in the fourth quarter, while freshman
ALAN ANNAZONE (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) collected 12 saves for the Red Hawks.
Montclair State now closes out the regular season and its KLC schedule on Saturday, April 24, at New York Maritime at 1:00 p.m., while Kings Point hosts conference foe Manhattanville that day at noon.
