Montclair Edges William Paterson, 2-1

Little Falls, NJ - Senior southpaw JEFF GOGAL (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) tossed a complete game and senior MIKE WEISS (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape Regional) scored the go-ahead run as #30 Montclair State defeated #24 William Paterson 2-1 Thursday afternoon in New Jersey Athletic Conference action at Yogi Berra Stadium.

With the win MSU improves to 20-10 overall and 10-4 in the NJAC. WPU falls to 22-10 and 11-4 in conference play.

The Red Hawks got things going early in the first as centerfielder MIKE HALLIGAN (Pompton Plains, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) walked to start the bottom of the first. Sophomore DANNY RODRIGUEZ (South Brunswick, NJ/South Brunswick) then singled to right-centerfield to put two runners aboard. After a successful sacrifice, senior PJ Baccarella (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) then lofted his own sacrifice to drive home Halligan for the game's first run.

The Pioneers then tied things up in their half of the second inning. Catcher Ken Lup (Hamilton, NJ/McCorristin) started off the inning with a single. Lup then moved around the bases on a wild pitch and stolen base respectively before junior Adam Rehl (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg) lofted a sacrifice fly to tie the game at one.

Montclair then pushed across what would be the winning run in the bottom of the fourth as MARC DECASTRO (Haddon heights, NJ/Pope Paul VI) grounded into an RBI fielders choice, scoring Weiss who reached base on a leadoff single.

Gogal improves to 5-2 allowing six hits, all singles, and one earned run. He also struck out five and walked three.

Junior Dan Corrado (Dumont, NJ/Dumont) suffers the loss for the Pioneers. Corrado (2-3) allowed two runs on six hits in six innings of work.

Offensively for the Red Hawks Baccarella finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Rick Pignatello (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) and Joe Hernandez (Hamilton Twp./Steinert) each had two hits for the Pioneers.
