Little Falls, NJ - Freshman Rob Motacki (Union, NJ/Union) tossed a complete game for his fourth victory of the season as New Jersey City University picked up their first win in the New Jersey Athletic Conference for 2004 defeating Montclair State 10-8 Thursday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium.
The win is the first for NJCU against Montclair since 1999, a span of eight games. NJCU knocked the Red Hawks, 7-5 decision at Yogi Berra Stadium that season.
Motacki (4-2) gutted out the win, despite allowing eight earned runs and 11 hits in the contest.
The Gothic Knights (11-8, 1-3 NJAC) rallied late scoring five times in their half of the inning to erase a three-run deficit. Trailing 8-5, NJCU scored once as Wilfredo Del Valle (West New York, NJ/Memorial) singled home a run. Steve Stiller (North Arlington, NJ/North Arlington) delivered an RBI single to cut the lead to one and NJCU tied the game as Jim Depsey (Neptune, NJ/Neptune) brought home a run on a fielder's choice. Wes Batista (Passaic, NJ/Passaic) put the Gothic Knights ahead with an RBI fielder's choice of his own before designated hitter Paul Geiger (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) tacked on an insurance run with an RBI single for a 10-8 advantage.
Montclair State would threaten in each of the eighth and ninth innings, but, Motacki was able to work his way out the innings to preserve the victory.
The Red Hawks (9-7, 2-1 NJAC) used the long ball to jump ahead early in the game. Junior
ROB BLACKBURN (Sussex, NJ/Vernon) hit his second homerun of the season, a three run shot, to put MSU ahead 6-2 in the third. Leftfielder
BRIAN BUTLER (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo Regional) blasted his first round-tripper of the season, a two run shot in the fifth, to extend Montclair's lead to 8-4.
ALAN SANDBERG (Sussex, NJ/High Point Regional) took the loss in relief. Sandberg (0-1) allowed five runs, four earned, and three hits while facing five batters in the eighth.
Jonathan Thomas (Newark, NJ/St. Benedict's Prep) continued his hot hitting with a 3-for-4 afternoon. He also drove in two and scored twice. Denis Peguero (Newark, NJ/Queen of Peace) finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored for NJCU.
PJ Baccarella (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) finished 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Red Hawks while Blackburn went 2-for-2 with a double, three-run homer and two runs scored.
