Montclair, NJ - Freshman attack Mark Bielicky (Martinsville, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) scored eight goals and senior midfielder Brian Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) added five goals and an assist to power Stevens Institute of Technology to a 23-9 win over Montclair State University in the championship game of the Knickerbocker Lacrosse Conference Tournament on Saturday at DeBaun Field.
With the win, Stevens 11-2 earns its fourth straight Knickerbocker championship and automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.
JOHN DELLA PESCA (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) scored a season-high six goals for Montclair State, which had its five-game winning streak snapped, falls to 12-3
Stevens scored the first five goals of the game and never trailed. Freshman defenseman Josh Smith (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) scored his first collegiate goal just 52 seconds into the game to give the Ducks the quick lead. Bielicky scored two goals in a span of 1:04 and Lalli followed 28 seconds later as Stevens led 4-0 with 11:07 left in the first quarter.
Trailing 5-0, Montclair State scored five of the next seven goals to cut the Stevens lead to 7-5. Della Pesca scored three of his five goals during that stretch. Stevens countered by scoring six of the final seven goals of the second quarter. The Ducks scored three times in the final 1:06 to extend their lead to 13-6 at halftime.
Stevens pulled away at the end of the third quarter. Sophomore attack Rich Benson (Rehoboth Beach, Del./Cape Henlopen) scored with 2:26 left to ignite a 9-0 run in a span of 13 minutes.
The Ducks held a 60-28 advantage in shots.
