Men's Soccer Remains Unbeaten, Tops John Jay

New York, NY (09/15/04) - The Montclair State men's soccer team battled through the rain and John Jay College as the Red Hawks remained unbeaten with a 3-0 victory on Wednesday evening.

Junior KYLE HUGHES notched his fourth goal of the season and NJAC Offensive Player of the Week RYAN MORGAN added two more goals as MSU improved to 4-0-1 overall this season.

Montclair State dominated throughout the first half as the Red Hawks put 13 shots on goal, however, they were unsuccessful at finding the back of the net. That is until MSU was awarded a penalty kick with 33:20 to play. Hughes converted the opportunity en route to a 1-0 Montclair State lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Red Hawks kept up the pressure and finally cracked through the Bloodhounds (1-5), defense. Morgan scored with 26:35 to play and later added his second with just over seven minutes left for his second straight multiple-goal contest.

The Red Hawks outshot John Jay, 24-2 and had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. CHRIS OWEN and freshman GABE MERLA, who made one save, combined on the shutout. Shane Norbert recorded eight saves for John Jay.

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, September 18, as they begin New Jersey Athletic Conference play. Montclair will host the Lions of The College of New Jersey at MSU Soccer Park at 2:00 pm.
