WPU Snaps Montclair Win Streak, 72-63

Wayne, NJ - Junior guard Kelvin DeLosAngeles and senior guard Robert Sullivan combined to power a 9-0, first-half run as William Paterson downed backyard New Jersey Athletic Conference rival Montclair State, 72-63, Wednesday night before 775 at the Rec Center.

Sophomore forward Luis Martinez led the Pioneers (13-5, 5-5 NJAC) in scoring for the third straight game, pumping in 14 points as his team snapped the Red Hawks' (10-6, 5-3 NJAC) eight-game winning streak. Senior guard LAMONT NEWELL paced all scorers with 22 points for Montclair State.

The game was tied at 10-all when DeLosAngeles and Sullivan combined to put the Pioneers ahead to stay. DeLosAngeles hit a 3-pointer and lay-up, while Sullivan added two lay-ups during the spurt as William Paterson went up 19-10 with 6:17 remaining in the first half. The Pioneers led 27-18 at the half and held an 18-point bulge, 57-39, after a free throw by Martinez with 7:35 remaining. Montclair State never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Junior guards Feron McGee and Mario Rivero each added 10 points for the victors, who outscored the Red Hawks 38-12 on points in the paint and 33-8 in bench points, including the 14 from Martinez.

The Pioneers owned a 32-24 edge on the glass and shot 50.0 percent (26-for-52) while the Red Hawks hit 43.2 percent (19-for-44) of their shots.

Junior guard JAMAL FORD had 13 points and junior forward Gian-Paul Gonzalez added 12 for Montclair State.

William Paterson returns to action Saturday, Jan. 29, when it travels to Richard Stockton for a NJAC game at 4 p.m., while Montclair State plays the same day at 7 p.m. at Rutgers-Newark.
