Montclair, NJ (1/6/05) - Sophomore forward
STEPHANIE MACHIN connected on a lay-up with just nine seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Montclair State University women's basketball team to a 66-64 decision over Farmingdale State University tonight in NCAA Division III action at Panzer Gymnasium.
It was Montclair first lead since the first minute of the contest, and improved MSU's record to 7-4 overall. FSU saw its six-game winning string dating back to Nov. 30 snapped in falling to 6-3 this season.
Farmingdale State broke out to a 21-4 first-half lead en route to a 32-22 advantage at the break, before Montclair State put up 44 points in the second stanza. The visiting Rams led by as much as 11 points with 11:53 left, before MSU closed to within a point at 53-52 with 6:27 left.
The Red Hawks did so again with 42 seconds remaining, this time on a Machin free throw to come within 64-63, setting the stage for her game-winning field goal as she finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Freshman forward
MICHELLE MADEJ led Montclair with 12 points, while freshman guard
JESSICA GARRABRANT paced MSU with 13 rebounds and added nine points and four assists.
Senior forward Sharon Billips led all players with 14 points and added four assists for FSU, while junior guard Angela Williams contributed 13 rebounds and senior guard Taisha Roberts scored 11 points.
Montclair State returns to New Jersey Athletic Conference action at Rowan University on Monday, Jan. 10, while Farmingdale State travels to Wilkes (PA) University this Saturday afternoon.
