No. 11 MSU Thumps Drew, 4-1

Montclair, NJ(10/11/05)  - Junior forward KRISTEN SWARTZ tallied a goal and an assist as 12th-ranked Montclair State cruised to a 4-1 victory over Drew University in NCAA Division III Field Hockey action at Sprague Field on Tuesday evening.

JENNIFER TANIS and KARLI TROISI each added a goal for the Red Hawks, who upped their record to 9-1on the season. The win was also the 48th for MSU head coach Beth Gottung, tying her with Donna Olson for the most wins in Montclair State history.

Whitney Kerns  had the lone goal for the Rangers, who fell to 6-6 with their second straight loss.

Montclair State nearly put a goal on the board in the first 90 seconds of the game as Tanis flipped a shot that trickled toward the goal line before being swept away by Nicole Gagliardi keeping the game scoreless.However, the Red Hawks, who outshot Drew, 22-3 in the game, kept the pressure up and finally broke through at the 24:59 mark as BRISA CASAS flipped a shot from the right side past goalkeeper Anne Wallin for her second goal of the season.

Just under 10 minutes later, the Red Hawks extended the lead to 2-0 as Troisi notched her first of the season. Off a penalty corner, JEN SOSS collected a loose ball and slipped a pass to Troisi,who banged home the shot as MSU took the two-goal lead into halftime.

In the second half,Swartz scored her sixth of the season off an assist from Alexandria  Kelly at the 42:38 mark and Tanis would follow two minutes later with her sixth as Swartz picked up the assist. Drew would break the shutout with 1:30 to play as Kerns completed a perfec penalty corner for her fourth of the season. Jen Schoepflin and Sydney Schloss picked up the assists.

MSU goalkeeper ROBYN APICELLI made a pair of saves in 65 minutes of action before giving way to JACKIE DERICCO. Wallin had eight saves for the Rangers.

 Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, October 15 as they host sixth-ranked Skidmore College at Sprague Field (1:00 pm). Drew is also in action that day at Wilkes University for a 1:00 pm start.
