ALEXANDRIA KELLY scored off a penalty corner 1:09 into overtime as No. 11 Montclair State edged No. 5 The College of New Jersey, 2-1, in NJAC Field Hockey action at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.
JEN SOSS had goal and an assist for the Red Hawks, who improved to 14-1 overall (2-1 NJAC) and defeated the Lions for just the third time in the last 40 meetings between the teams since 1980. Ironically,all three victories have come at home in overtime.
Allison Greene scored for the Lions, who fell to 11-4 overall with their second straight 2-1 overtime loss. TCNJ completed their conference slate at 4-2 with both league losses coming by the identical 2-1 margin.
Tied heading into the extra period, Montclair State was awarded a penalty corner. After the ball was inserted, Soss guided a pass to Kelly, who knocked in the game-winner for her ninth tally of the season.
TCNJ took an early 1-0as Greene collected her 12th goal of the season at the 8:22 mark. Jenna Durante had the assist. The Red Hawks would then retie the game with 12:24 left in the half as
JENNIFER TANIS got pass on the the stick of Soss, who flipped the ball past Kristina Beyel for the goal, Soss' fifth of they ear.
From there offensive opportunities were hard to come by as each defense stepped up the pace in the game, which was played in between a light but steady rain. The Lions managed to outshoot Montclair State, 8-7 and held a 10-7 edge in penalty corners.
ROBYN APICELLI had six saves for the Red Hawks as she earned her14th win of the season. Beyel had four stops in the cage for the Lions.
Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, October 26 as they host backyard rival William Paterson at Sprague Field (7:00 pm). TCNJ returns to Lions Stadium on Tuesday, October 25 to face Eastern University at 7:30 pm.
