Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Soss, Kelly Lead No. 6 MSU Over William Paterson

Montclair, NJ (10/26/05) –  Junior JEN SOSS (right) scored twice and ALEXANDRIA KELLY added a goal and an assist as sixth-ranked Montclair State picked up its eighth straight victory and tied the school mark for wins in a season, knocking off backyard rival William Paterson, 4-1 in NJAC Field Hockey action at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.

KRISTEN SWARTZ  had a goal for MSU, which improved to 15-1 (3-1 NJAC) and matched the single-season win total set in 2001 and duplicated in 2003. Katie Jo Cipriani  had a goal for the Lady Pioneers (5-10, 0-6 NJAC), which dropped their fourth straight.

Despite being outshot 20-5, William Pateron nearly got the first goal of the game 7:28 in as Danielle Herbeck  fired a shot from six yards out that MSU goalkeeper ROBYN APICELLI made a sprawling save on to keep the game scoreless. It stayed that way for five more minutes before MSU struck on a penalty corner. JENNIFER TANIS  inserted the ball to KIM DEMKOWICZ, who then made the perfect stick stop allowing Soss a free blast that hit the back of the cage for a 1-0 Red Hawk lead.

Montclair State took that one-goal advantage into the second half and then added three more. Swartz collected her ninth tally of the season at 39:17 and Soss got her second of the game off a Kelly assist at 47:04 pushing the lead to 3-0. Kelly then registered her team-leading 10 th of the year 65 seconds later (48:09). Off a penalty corner, Tanis tapped a pass to LAUREN ZEHNDER, who rolled a pass across the field to Kelly, who then one-timed the ball into the cage.

William Paterson would avert the shutout with 13:44 to play as Cipriani got her sixth goal of the season. Off a corner, Tina Londino  took a loose ball inside the circle and flipped a shot that was initially stopped, however, Cipriani was there to bang home the rebound.

Apicelli finished with three saves for MSU, which held a 16-8 advantage in penalty corners. Jessie Mull  had 11 saves for the Lady Pioneers.

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, October 29 as they host Wilkes University at 1:00 pm.
