Kelly Scores Twice as No. 6 MSU Tops Wilkes, 3-1

Montclair, NJ (10/29/05) – Senior ALEXANDRIA KELLY scored a pair of goals as sixth-ranked Montclair State set a school records fo rwins in a season with a 3-1 triumph over Wilkes University in NCAA Division III Field Hockey action at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.

JENNIFER TANIS had a goal for the Red Hawks, who won their ninth straight and picked up win No. 16 on the season, setting a new school record.Montclair, now 16-1 on the season, broke the previous standard of15 set in 2001 and duplicated in 2003.

Lindsey Thomas had a goal for the Colonels, who had their two-match win streak stopped. Wilkes is now 9-9 on the season.

The Red Hawks built a 3-0 cushion in the first 15 minutes of the game. Kelly, the Red Hawks' leading scorer, got Montclair on the board in the first five minutes oft he game as she tapped in an Elyse Winkle pass for her 11th of the season at the 4:24 mark. Kelly would make it a two-goal MSU advantage at 9:11 taking a JESS ROSEWALL pass and knocking in a shot toward the lower-left portion of the cage.Tanis capped off the scoring with her ninth of the year, off a penalty corner. JEN SOSS picked up the assist.

Wilkes would get its lone goal with 10:17 to play off a penalty corner. Thomas fed a pass to Kerry Battersby who fired a shot toward the left-hand side of the cage that Thomas redirected in for her fifth tally of the season.

Hilary Weber made five saves for Wilkes, which was outshot in the game, 19-5. MSU's ROBYN APICELLI made one save as she earned her 16th victory of the season – a new Red Hawks single-season record.

Both teams return to action on Wednesday, November 2. Montclair State will travel to Glassboro,NJ to face fifth-ranked Rowan in an NJAC Championship matchup with the winner earning the automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.That game begins at 4:00 pm.
