Montclair, NJ (10/5/05) – Senior Traver Davis knocked in his own rebound with 32 seconds remaining in overtime as Johns Hopkins University edged Montclair State, 2-1, in NCAA Division III Men's Soccer action at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.
Steve Read had the other goal for the Blue Jays, who upped their record to 7-1-3 with their second straight win following a trio ties.
ILYAS TASCI recorded his fourth goal of the season for Montclair State , which suffered its second straight loss and fell to 7-4-1 .
The teams seemed to be headed for the second overtime period, but Hopkins gained control of a loose ball in the offensive end and moved inside the 18 where Davis got a shot off from seven yards out that was blocked by an MSU defender. But the ball came back out to Davis, who punched a shot into the upper-left portion of the goal for his first of the season and the game-winner.
The Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead at exactly the 21 st minute as Read collected a loose ball from 25-yards out and lofted a shot that ducked into the top-middle portion of the goal past MSU netminder
CHRIS OWEN . It was Read's first tally of the season. MSU would get the goal back just over six minutes later as Tasci settled a clearing pass and fired a shot from the top of the 18-yardline inside the left post, knotting the game at 1-1.
Montclair State nearly took the lead in the first 10 minutes as
MATT BEHEN put through a ball that bounced off the turf and over the head of goalkeeper Dan Coble . The ball appeared headed for the net, but defender Jeff Grosser raced in and knocked the ball off the backline keeping the game scoreless.
Coble made three saves for the Blue Jays, who were outshot in the game, 15-11. Owen had one saves for the Red Hawks.
Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, October 8 as they host Mitchell College at MSU Soccer Park . Kickoff of the Homecoming Day contest is 1:00 pm.
